INTRODUCTION TO OMEGA ARTS & CRAFTS

Sarawak is situated northwest of Borneo, the third largest island in the world. The largest state of Malaysia, it covers an area of 124,445 square kilometers (48,342 square miles). The origin of the word Sarawak comes from the Malay “serawak” meaning antimony, a mineral used as a dyestuff and medicine. Sarawak population consists of 25 ethnic groups, with multi-ethnic culture living side by side in peace and harmony for centuries that fascinated the Westerners. Sarawak's natural beauty is legendary; its history rich; its culture magnificent and diverse. Its traditional way of life, adapted to the tropical rainforest, epitomizes an Eco-friendly lifestyle. Its ancient arts and crafts denote a certain style.

The peoples of Sarawak are generally artistic in nature. Inherently, every ethnic group produces excellent craft works, and many cultures have developed into traditional skills to the level of fine art. Many handicrafts and works of art are locally made and are unique to Sarawak. They are offered for sale through the major cities and townships in Sarawak and in the longhouses.

The major crafts of the Sarawak region consist of bead craft, ceramic ware, woodcarvings, many of its designs and motifs are promoted through T-shirts, books and paintings. Many of the crafts incorporate the beliefs of the people and their way of life. The decorative arts of Sarawak by the various natives such as - intricate warp - "ikat" of the Iban, rattan basketry of Bidayuh, beadwork of Orange Ulu, carving of Malay, brassware of Melanau, ceramics of the Chinese – are incorporated in one way or the other with the influences of 100 years’ rule by the "White Rajah" to produce a uniqueness that is typically Sarawak Style.
